Like frozen yoghurt is of today, juice was the biggest craze back in my high school days. My love for juice started when Boost Juice opened up in the mall. I was so desperate to get a job there. After I handed in my CV, I would turn up at the juice bar daily, to purchase a drink and conveniently remind them of my application. My eagerness / mild form of harassment worked off and I was finally hired! Every shift you worked, you were allowed a free smoothie or juice. This is when I started to get excited about all the different flavour combinations and the added health benefits of fruits and vegetables.
These days I have my own juicer! Not only are juices delicious, but they are such an easy way to get extra nutrients and plants into your diet. Dr Libby says that juicing provides you with roughly 75% of the nutrients of the whole fruit or vegetable. So why not!
My beasty juicer
My top tips for juicing:
- Always prepare your fruit before you start juicing i.e. cutting off all the rind and pith on citrus fruits and cutting everything into smaller pieces.
- Put a plastic bag in the rubbish compartment that collects all the fruit scraps. This makes the clean up much quicker.
My favourite juice of the moment is:
Carrot, orange, kale, lemon & ginger juice
Makes one large glass:
- 2 oranges
- 4 carrots
- 2 big handfuls of kale
- 1/2 a lemon
- a knob of ginger about an inch long
- Optional: one cucumber
Start by slicing up the the oranges and lemon. Make sure to get rid of the rind and a lot of the pith. Cut the carrot into smaller pieces.
Then put everything through the juicer – you’ll get more goodness from the kale if you juice it at the same time as the oranges or carrots as they’re so juicy!
So yum and refreshing!
Some other classic combinations that I love
- carrot – optional
- red apple
- optional: cucumber, celery
What are your favourite combinations? I would love some more ideas!
